New Rail Connection for Olvia Port

21 Окт

Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) and Mykolaiv municipal authorities elaborate the feasibility study for construction of the second railway line between the stations Prybuzka and Zhovtneva in Korabelny district of the city in order to enhance the throughput capacity in the directioin of Special Sea Port (SSP) Olvia.

As reported by Press Office of State Enterprise (SE) Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA), this decision was taken as an outcome of the round table Development of Rail Infrastructure at Korabelny District of Mykolaiv City which took place in the Olvia port authority (USPA branch) participated by state and municipal authorities, Ukrzaliznytsia and maritime business entities of the district.

“As a follow-up of the meeting, there was a decision passed on expediency of developing a feasibility study for reconstruction of the station Zhovtneva which would include inter alia construction of the second parallel track from the station Prybuzka, with transformation to electricity instead of the diesel locomotion, which is going to considerably improve the natural environment and enlarge the station’s throughput capacity”, says the report of Press Office.

New Rail Connection for Olvia Port

As possible variants of the throughput capacity increase, there were also considered construction of a by-pass railroad off the residential areas from the marshalling yard of the station Mykolaiv-Sortyrovochna to Zhovtneva, designing and building a two-level transport juncture at the crossing of rail track Prybuzka – Zhovtneva with Bogoyavlensky Avenue, restoration and completion of all the tracks at Prybuzka, etc.

According to SSP Olvia Head of Port Authority, for the recent years the ports of Mykolaiv region show a sharp and powerful growth of transhipment. As per his data, in 2020 stevedoring companies only in Korabelny district of Mykolaiv handled some 18M t of cargoes (55-60% of which from/to the railway transport). By analytics’ forecasts, up to 2030 with a favourable economic situation and good crops, the cargo turnover may boost up to 30M t a year.

The rough estimates embrace the stevedores EVT Grain, Nika-Tera, QTerminals Olvia, Shipyard Okean, Terminal-UPSS, and Mykolaiv Alumina Plant. The total volume of railway-carried cargo for these companies goes through the single non-electrified track from Prybuzka to Zhovtneva, and by the way stops all the motor road flow passing Bogoyavlensky Avenue. Hence the necessity of building the second rail line.

USPA initiated the elaboration of fundamental design solutions toward the development of Mykolaiv port-industrial centre which in their turn include the analysis of situation and development prospects of the sea ports in line with development of other kinds of transport infrastructure and areas.
