Brooklyn-Kiev Port Launching Investment Project with CMA CGM to Boost Container Traffic to 0.5M TEU

A road map for implementation of Memorandum of Cooperation with a global container carrier CMA CGM Group was discussed in Odessa Port. It was declared during the meeting that owing to the investment project the company Brooklyn-Kiev Port will be able to enlarge its container turnover in Khlibna Havan (Cereal Harbour) twice within next 5 years and reach the benchmark of 0.5M TEU, as per Odessa Port Authority.
The project of Berths 13-z and 14-z of Odessa Port which is going to enable to double the Khlibna Havan box terminal throughput capacity will be submitted for the port’s council approval as soon as the first quarter of this year. By that time the legal aspects of the project’s PPP and business plan interim theses should be agreed upon. This was arranged by the participants of the first conference on realisation of the quadripartite Memorandum of Cooperation between the state enterprise (SE) Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA), SE Odessa Port, LLC Brooklyn-Kiev Port, and the French shipping line CMA CGM Group being among the Top 5 of world’s container carriers.
Let’s remind that the document’s solemn signing took place on 7 December in Marseilles in the presence of Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelian and USPA CEO Raivis Veckagans.
The project envisages extention of Berth 42 waterfront by 370 m and creation of 9-hectare warehouse spaces on the ex-shipyard territory. These measures will enable the Brooklyn-Kiev Port company’s terminal operator to double container turnover within the next 5 years bring it to the point of 0.5M TEU.
“Not much time has passed from the moment of the memo signing, however, the port administration together with our partners from LLC Brooklyn-Kiev Port managed to do many things for its realisation”, commented SE Odessa Port Authority CEO Ihor Tkachuk.
“We have already got a preliminary schedule of solving the issues dedicated to obtaining permits and construction services. The technical project is being developed and negotiations are being carried out with the company which is to prepare a business plan and other documents necessary for the investor’s crediting expansion”.
The investor’s representative in the meeting expressed satisfaction with the project realisation quick start. “Our company believes in the future of Ukraine. It is our interest to enlarge throughput of the terminal in Odessa Port and intention to put our investments in it”, he pointed out., and also added that in February the arrival of the CMA CGM Group specialists is planned to help Ukrainian colleagues in project’s technical calculations realisation.
CMA CGM is considered one of the biggest sea container carriers in France. The company’s HQ is situated in Marseille. The company is present in more than 160 countries. The company’s fleet comprises about 500 ships with a total capacity of 2.53 M TEU which are serviced in 420 ports worldwide and transferred 18,95M TEU for the last year.
LLC Brooklyn-Kiev Port is a container terminal operator based on Berths 42-43 in Khlibna Havan of Odessa Port. The company being co-founded by CMA CGM Group, was founded in 2006 and was dealing with the Berth 42 construction issues on the former shipyard territory passed to the port.
At the moment ships are handled by three STS cranes at the terminal. as per the Odessa Branch of USPA, the box turnover of Brooklyn-Kiev Port has reached 260,000 TEU.
