Experts from the Netherlands will conduct evaluation of the environmental control efficiency in Ukrainian ports ordered by State Ecological Inspectorate of Ukraine (SEIU), and point out necessary changes for the ecological legislation of Ukraine, as reported by Acting Head of SEIU Iegor Firsov.
“For rather short time of my work in SEIU it were the complaints on activities of the inspectors in ports I have heard the most. Everyone talks about corruption during the ships inspections. And it’s only honest to admit that it is certainly so. International trade is a tasty morsel for bribetakers. On the other hand, there are both overt violations and absolute blatancy on the part of business entities. Which side here is right and how to achieve abidance by the environmental law? This is the situation where an ‘international arbiter’ is going to help us”, has written Mr Firsov in his Facebook.
According to him, SEIU jointly with Reforms Support Office of Ministry of Energy and Environment Protection of Ukraine with the support by Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands implements the project aimed at assessment of environmental control in Ukrainian ports from the standpoint of its efficiency and transparency.
“Experts from Rotterdam Port will help appraise the state of international standards introduction in three ports of Ukraine and denote necessary changes in the ecology law. Upon realisation of this project we are obtaining transparent and efficient control procedures under best world standards, and starting at once implementation of necessary and vital changes”, informed Acting Head of SEIU.
The day before Ukrainian sea ports authority (USPA) had announced implementation of the ecological management system in compliance with requirements of the international and national standards ISO 14001: 2015, as reported the authority’s Press Office.
From 26 November to 04 December 2019 training of the employees under the above mentioned standard and that of the internal auditors including basic EMAS was held in Odessa.
The ecological management improvement is aimed at refining environment protection management activities in the ports, reduction of the work’s impact on the environment, unconditional implementation of nature-protecting laws, and upgrade of Ukrainian sea ports’ image in the global maritime community.
