Ukraine is ready to commence recreational dredging works and releveling depths of Ukrainian part of the Prypiat river up to the navigable numbers, as declared Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Vladyslav Kryklii in the course of his working visit to Belarus.

As per the Press Office of Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine (MIU), Mr Kryklii met Minister of Transport and Communications of Belarus Aleksei Avramenko and discussed a number of actual matters concerning the Ukrainian-Belorussian collaboration in the sphere of transport infrastructure and development of international transport corridors the Black Sea – the Baltic Sea, in particular, restoration of the international waterway Е-40 as concerns the Dnipro – Prypiat connection.

“Our main goal and task in the view of the further cooperation is the development of shipping by the rivers Prypiat and Dnipro, restoration of the full-scale navigation, including the E-40 project realisation framework. The project of restoring the international river route E-40 has reached the practical realisation phase. The dredging and bringing navigable depths to the necessary level as well and other works are planned to get launched along with the start of navigation”, he announced.

The MIU head informed that Ukrainian party has planned for 2020 the River Information System (RIS) to be expanded from Vyshgorod to the border with Belarus. Moreover, there are arrangements envisaged to provide radio connections in the range of marine mobile communications. Besides, some trans-border touristic flows are being actively sounded.

“We actively work to develop the inland waterways of Ukrainian state. The river shipping volumes enlarge. The new draft Law on Inland Water Transport is to be adopted by the parliament soon. we are going to develop inland water traffic including transit transportations as the inland waterways of Ukraine embrace the rivers identified by European Agreement on Main Inland Waterways of International Importance, in particular the Danube (P80), the Dnipro (P40), and the Dniester (P90). We are going to develop transit shipping”, stressed Mr Kryklii.

During the meeting Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine has pointed out the passenger flow growth in the air transport, increase of rail transport throughput, and positive experience of joint with Belarus international railway projects realisation, namely the container trains Viking and Zubr. He noted that it is necessary to develop a transport corridor to connect the Scandinavian and Baltic countries with Belarus Republic and Ukraine.

The Dredging Fleet Branch of Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) and LLC Sobi signed in December 2019 the contract on dredging works at the Ukrainian part of the Prypiat river. The works envisage processing the ground on several rifts created by the riverbed grounds accretion from Belarus. The rifts and spits do not contain radioactive substances, nevertheless the works are to be monitored accordingly.

The unacceptable condition of Ukrainian Prypiat’s navigable fairway hampers the restoration of full-scale river traffic between Ukraine and Belarus.

The E-40 waterway is a route of above 2,000 km passing via Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine territories. The project Restoration of E-40 Arterial Waterway on the Dnipro – Vistula Leg started in 2014. The project is aimed at providing a new merchant route between the Baltic and Black Seas ports allowing to transfer up to 4M t of cargoes annually.
