Detailed Design of Deep Water Port Anaklia to be Developed by BergerABAM

The international tender on the Anaklia deep water port detailed design in Georgia has been won by a world major design and construction management company BergerABAM, as reported the online edition Business Georgia.
The best offer of the tender was submitted by the mentioned above Louis Berger Group associate, among the total 20 rival companies. Government of Georgia has already approved the company selected by Anaklia Development Consortium.
The detailed Anaklia deep water port design comprises a full project layout of the berth’s first phase by which the sea and land building works planned are to be carried out till 2020 inclusively. This blueprint envisages designing a 1.6 km breakwater, erecting a 625 m quay and multifunctional terminal, deepening the sea harbourage down to 16 m, designing utility premises and other relevant infrastructure, to be elaborated in line with the up-to-date technologies and international standards.
Anaklia Development Consortium had worked out the interim design in the first half of 2017, and Government of Georgia adopted the document in November 2017. The interim design’s development was participated by well-known in the world project companies.
BergerABAM is one of the world leaders in the field of project, engineering, maritime, constructional management, underwater researches and environment protection services. The company’s portfolio embraces projects on development of maritime and port infrastructure of Panama, UAE (Dubai), Mexico, and the USA (Washington).
The deep water port Anaklia construction is a superior investment project in Georgia. The project’s realization is nursed by Anaklia Development Consortium LLC, a joint venture of the Georgian TBC Holding LLC and a major USA developer Conti International LLC fulfilling projects in the infrastructure and capital development sphere. Consortium obtained the contract on this project in 2016. The other key partners are a foremost ports designer Moffatt & Nichol and a principal consultant on port deals Maritime & Transport Business Solutions (the Netherlands).
In March 2017 Consortium submitted the general port development plan intended for 50 years. According to the document, the project’s realization envisages nine phases. The first phase realization (2017-2020) provides for erection of a cargo port, container terminal, breakwater and intermodal rail transport servicing yard. The first phase is planned to absorb $586M for its completion, after which the port’s annual throughput is to amount to 16.8M t. Upon the full project’s completion which the port’s annual throughput is going to reach 76.5M t. Simultaneously with the port a satellite city is planned to be built.
In August 2017 the American company SSA Marine won the tender of Government of Georgia to become the operator and investor of the deep water port Anaklia. SSA Marine based in Seattle is dedicated to marine terminal and railway activities. The company owns terminals in nine countries. It operates on over 250 terminals on five continents and annually handles above 27M TEU.
Anaklia Port ought to breathe life in the Caucasus and Central Asia opening trade routes for the neighbours and land-locked nations such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. The access to these states is very restricted, so the Anaklia infrastructure development is going to secure the most efficient and reliable route for the millions of people living in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
Anaklia situated on the east coast of the Black Sea is located on the shortest itinerary from China to Europe. This itinerary has become the basic goal of Chinese infrastructural investments accounting $40Bn provisioned under the aegis of Silk Road Development Fund. Re-creation of Silk Road is an important priority for Georgia and is based on Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, DCFTA signed by the country’s government with EU in December 2014.
In the framework of the present agreement Anaklia Development Consortium will also obtain the right to develop a Free Trade Zone that would support the port’s activity and trade becoming home for both local and international business. It will operate in the tax free mode in order to stimulate shipowners, manufacturers, companies and employees towards change of place and use of the port.
