The construction of a new deep-sea port of Anaklia was officially launched in Georgia. This was reported by the press service of the country’s government.
“Today, a new Georgia begins here (…) The port is a unique project, since the port on the Silk Road map will confirm the position of Georgia. This port allows residents of all Georgia, not just this region, to get completely different opportunities for their own business and start a new business. Several thousand people will be employed only in the process of construction, “- Prime Minister of Georgia Georgy Kvirikashvili announced during the ceremony of commencement of construction on Sunday.

According to the prime minister, the deep-water port of Anaklia will be the precursor of Georgia’s innovation. “This is a reality, there is no exaggeration. Around the port, several thousand hectares will be developed: production, storage, logistics and, of course, a new residential area. Georgia will enter the world scale as a country of international cooperation, stability and peace, “Kvirikashvili said.
The project of the deep-water port of Anaklia is the largest investment project in Georgia. In March 2017, the Consortium for Development Anaklia presented a master plan for the development of the port, designed for 50 years. Development of a document implemented jointly with the Dutch consulting company MTBS – Maritime and Transport Business Solutions. The general plan was approved by the Georgian government in October 2017.
According to the document, the implementation of the project for the construction and development of port includes 9 phases. The implementation of the first phase of construction (2017-2020) provides the construction of a cargo port, a container terminal, a breakwater and a site for servicing intermodal railway transport. The implementation of the first phase is planned to be $ 586 million. After the implementation of the first phase, the annual throughput of the port will be 16.8 million tons. After completion of the project, the annual capacity of the port will reach 76.5 million tons. In parallel with the construction of the port, it is planned to build a satellite city.
In August 2017, the US company SSA Marine won the tender of the Georgian government, becoming the operator and investor of the deep-water port of Anaklia. SSA Marine became the second US participant in the project. Another American company Conti International LLC and Georgian TBC Holding are the founders of the Anaklia Development Consortium.
SSA Marine (headquarters – Seattle) specializes in sea terminal and railway operations. The company owns terminals in nine countries. Operates on more than 250 terminals on five continents and annually processes more than 27 million TEU.
