Ukrainian Ports Rated by UNCTAD Latest World Ports LSCI

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development has published its world ports liner shipping connectivity index (LSCI) for 2019 topped by Shanghai, China with the rating 134.32, followed by Singapore (124.63 points), and Pusan, Korea (114.45 points).

The European container hubs boast Antwerp, Belgium with the highest rank of 93.73 shouldered by the 92.75 points won by Rotterdam, the Netherlands, while Germany’s Hamburg and Bremerhaven show only 77.46 and 62.18 respectively though well above France, Le Havre – 60.93.

The ranking assesses each port’s services basing on five aspects: number of ships called, their TEU capacity, maximum vessel size, number of services, and number of companies offering container traffic services.

Ukrainian ports please us with 24.23 points of Odessa (against 12.19 in 2006 though lower than its peak 26.16 in 2017), 15.74 earned by Yuzhny (now Pivdenny), and Chornomorsk (15.69).

Higher in the north part of the Black Sea is only Constanta, Romania – 24.82 i.e. only 0.59 up from Odessa, while another main competitor in the area Russia’s Novorossiysk numbers as few as 20.23 points. The whole Black Sea basin leader is Gemlik, Turkey – 25.67 points.

It’s also interesting to note that the only sea connection of Moldova, Guirguilesti Port situated on a narrow plot of the Danube river bank between Ukraine and Moldova, is rated too, and shows 0.60 points.
