Ukrainian Ports’ Handling Record: Useful Notes

21 Янв

Taking a glance at official general cargo handling statistics referred to at the web site of Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA), one can note that the total record number can be seen divided into the three categories as follows:

Total 160,001,220 t / 118,37% up from the same total of the previous year.
Total for public stevedoring companies – 35,214,680 t / 105,6% of 2018.
Total for private stevedoring companies renting public berths – 60,958,150 t / 119,21%.
Total for stevedoring companies using their own berths – 63 828,390 / 125,95%.

We should remark that there are many public companies registered by USPA as port terminal operators using their own terminals – shipyards, port cold stores, etc. But their cargo throughput is scanty and never sets the tone. Most of this figure which is the largest share of the total 160M was achieved by private operators from minor ones like Smart Group (Ochakiv port), Beaurivage (Pivdenny port) and the newborn Evrovneshtorg (Olvia port) to such giants as TIS Group (Pivdenny port), Nibulon and Nika-Tera (Mykolaiv port), having given the biggest contribution.

Let’s take note that the private stevedores using their own berths not only reach the largest cargo handling numbers, but also show the biggest growth of short to 126% per annum, almost 6% bigger than those leasing their berths from USPA. This fact only corroborates the course taken by Ministry and USPA toward port assets concession.
