Ukraine eyeing Vietnamese port as export hub

20 Июн

Ukraine’s Ministry of Infrastructure has been considering the possibility of developing southern Vietnam’s Lotus Port as a transport and logistics hub to handle its exports to Pacific markets.

Located at Ho Chi Minh City, Lotus Port is a Vietnamese-Ukrainian joint-venture company set up in 1991, in which Kiev holds a 38% stake.

Being keen to enter the Asian markets, Ukraine is now considering two possibilities to further development Lotus Port, according to deputy minister of infrastructure Viktor Dovgan.

The first option would see better utilisation of already available capacity, while the second would involve construction of new handling facilities and relevant infrastructure in the adjacent areas. While the first option would offer an earlier payback, the second suggests a more promising long-term outlook.

Ukrainian officials recently met with members of Lotus Port’s Board and the mayor of Ho Chi Minh to begin discussions about expanding the port’s footprint.

Lotus Port is capable of handling up to 2 Mtpa of various cargoes and 200,000 TEU.
