JS Ukrzaliznytsya (Ukrainian Railways) and the German transport and logistic group Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) have signed Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation on development of the intermodal rail traffic in Ukraine, and in the East European and Baltic countries in future. The signing took place on Thursday 30 July in Kyiv, as MIU (Ministry of Transport of Ukraine) Press Office reports.
The instrument signed envisages collaboration as concerns improvement of the intermodal rail traffic services quality by several ranges: both facilitation of administration procedures to accelerate the trains operations, and a number of arrangements to increase efficiency of intermodal trains, adjustment of the tariffs in accordance with the best international practices, and provision of the operational and commercial risks updated distribution.
“The bill on multimodal transport designed by MIU remains for us among the priorities to further develop the transport sector. It is going not only favour the environment protection due to a considerable volume of traffic transferring from the motor roads to the river and other environmentally friendly modes of delivery, but also significantly simplify all the procedures. Regardless of the transport modes changes and sophisticated logistics, it will be possible to deliver cargoes under only one carriage document i.e. the multimodal transport document. This would leverage the time and expenses, enlarge the domestic throughput and enhance the service. We enjoy the support by our German colleagues and dedicated experts of the maritime and railway sectors in order to exchange the experience and continue this thread’s development”, commented upon the MoU signing Minister of Infrastructure Vladyslav Kryklii.
Director of HHLA International GmbH Philip Sweens announced in late May the establishment of a multimodal operator to render the container cargoes rail transportation services in Ukraine. For that purpose the Ukrainian Intermodal Company (UIC) was founded in January 2020. Now it is owned 100% by HHLA, yet the latter plans to keep only 20-30% of the stock. The 50-60% more are going to belong to logistic companies and sea lines, while the rest would go to IPO.
HHLA is a major port and logistic company of Germany. it manages box terminals Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort in the port of Hamburg, the terminal CTO (Container Terminal Odessa) in Ukraine, and the terminal Transiidikeskuse in Tallinn, Estonia. The three German-based terminals embrace three quarters of the group’s overall box turnover. The group’s intermodal business is focused in the companies Metrans and Polzug. In 2019 the group enlarged the total container throughput by 3.3% compared to 2018 i.e. up to 7.577M TEU.
