Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine (MIU) has reported that they plan to continue the Dnipro River navigation all the year round, provided the weather conditions are favouring.

MIU has also advised that in spite of the corona-crisis and state budget amendments which cancelled the capex item on the amount of 77.3M UAH ($2.76m) by the program Provision of Operational and Safe State of Shipping Locks, capital repairs of the Dnipro sluices are going on.

It is pointed out that MIU managed to secure those projects funding on account of Eurofunds amounting to 232.2M UAH ($8.29M) received in early August.

“As a result of new changes in the State Budget taken in this March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the capital expenses at 77.3M UAH for the program of Dnipro locks maintenance have been unfortunately removed. Yet we keep on providing these works under the financial support of our European partners. our plans concern with the year-round navigation on the Dnipro subject to favourable weather conditions”, noted Minister of Infrastructure Vladyslav Kryklii.

In particular, MIU informed that at the Kyiv Sluice works on repair of the navigation chamber drainage system are launched; now the phase of equipment dismantling is on. The anticipated completion term is the end of this year.

At the Kaniv Sluice works on the upstream end gate replacement are finished; general construction works are on and expected to complete in November 2020. Besides that, there are works on replacement of the metal-clad switchgear and power cable lines in progress, the equipment dismantling is on. The anticipated completion term is the end of this year.

At the Dniprodzerzhynsk Sluice works on the downstream end gate replacement are in progress, the large-size units manufacturing is launched and expected to complete this year.

At the Kakhovka Sluice works on repair of the navigation chamber drainage system are launched; the phase of equipment dismantling is on. The anticipated completion term is the end of this year. There are works on repairs of the navigation chamber structures and hydraulic galleries are going on as well. The expected completion term is the end of this year.

“To maintain the locks in proper condition, the draft Law on Inland Water Transport envisages establishment of State Fund of Inland Waterways Development which is intended to finance maintenance, reconstruction, repairs, technical re-equipment and guard of navigational hydraulic structures”, added Mr Kryklii.
