The global shipping company CMA CGM intends to invest €20M in the development of Odessa sea port, informed Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelian.
Summarising his working visit to France last week, he wrote in his Facebook: “A document on €20M investments to Odessa Port by the French major container operator CMA CGM was signed”.
“Seeing Ukraine as a reliable partner by such major international companies as CMA CGM warrants the country’s success and further development. The country has risen 4 points in the annual rating Doing Business. Now we are 76th among 190, and Ukraine is concerned in collaboration with foreign investors”, declared the Minister.
Last Friday SE (state enterprise) Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA), SE Odessa Sea Trade Port, LLC Brooklyn-Kiev Port, and CMA CGM signed Memorandum of Understanding. Minister Omelian attended the MoU conclusion. The signing ceremony was held in Marseille.
“Promotion of cooperation between USPA, Brooklyn-Kiev Port, and CMA CGM is another example of efficient public-private partnership (PPP). According to our elaborated ports development strategy till 2038, the PPP projects would allow to involve almost 44Bn UAH invested in the port sector development. In the framework of this venture there will be provided refurbishment of Berths 13-z and 14-c in Odessa. This would enable to avoid ships idle laying and boost the cargo handling throughput”, noted Acting Chairman of USPA Raivis Veckagans.
“The container terminal in Khlibha Havan (Cereals Harbour) displays an impressive growth of handling numbers. However, in order to admit the 300 m long vessels the terminal lacks the Berth 42 length. At the moment the terminal operator LLC Brooklyn-Kiev Port solves this problem using resources of the universal Berth 43. Yet, this is not quite convenient. Taking into account the terminal’s existing development capacity, we are sure that our partners’’ decision, namely CMA CGM, to expand their presence in the port is going to bring benefits to all parties very soon. I hope that thanks to support by our dedicated ministry and USPA main body we’ll manage to realise a big infrastructure project which would strengthen more Odessa port’s competitive positions in the box handling market”, pointed out Manager of Odessa Branch of USPA Mr Tkachuk.
“The MoU signed today gives us hope that as soon as the nearest time a large scale infrastructure project will be implemented in Odessa Port to secure investments attraction to the port’s infrastructure development, cargo flows and ships calls number enlargement, input of new technologies, creation of new jobs, upgrading social standards”, added Mr Omelian.
LLC Brooklyn-Kiev Port operates the container terminal based on Berths 42-43 in Khlibna Havan of Odessa Port. The company boasting CMA CGM Group among its founders was established in 2006 dealing with the construction of Berth 42 at the territory of the former First Shiprepair Yard transferred to the port. The new berth started processing its first vessel on 23 October 2008, and less than a year and a half later on 22 February 2010 the first 300 m long box carrier CMA CGM Baudelaire moored the berth. At the moment ships handling at the terminal is provided by three STS cranes. In 2018 LLC Brooklyn-Kiev Port plans to raise its box handling up to 260,000 TEU.
CMA CGM Group (HQ in Marseille) is the world’s fourth container line. According to the actual data by Alphaliner, the company controls 11.9 % of the world maritime container traffic.
